Run by Carolie Goumarre, this tiny, garagiste-like operation in Chateauneuf du Pape was founded in the late 18th century, but only began estate bottling their wines in the late 1960s. From it minuscule 5-acres of vines, Domaine Galevan produces 420 cases of Chateauneuf.

The best wine I have yet tasted from this estate, the inky/ruby/purple-tinged 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape is a blend of 90% Grenache and 10% Mourvedre aged in old oak barrels. A hint of toasty oak is noticeable in the aromatics, which are dominated by black currant and black cherry fruit intertwined with notes of licorice, underbrush, and pepper. Spicy, dense, and full-bodied with superb purity, light to moderate tannin, and a long finish, it will be even better with several more years of bottle age, and will keep for 15+ years.
